Collision prevention safety service delivers digital alerts to motorists when responding emergency vehicles are nearby

TOPEKA, May 18, 2020 - Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) will equip its Motorist Assist vehicles with HAAS Alert’s collision prevention service Safety Cloud as part of a renewed partnership announced today. The agreement will enable the KHP vehicles to send real-time digital alerts to drivers when they’re en-route and on-scene responding to an incident, providing advance warning so that drivers have more time to safely slow down and comply with Kansas’ Move Over law.

Safety Cloud alerts drivers through a small transponder installed in the emergency vehicle and delivers real-time alerts to nearby motorists up to 30 seconds in advance. Drivers can receive the alerts through the Waze app on their mobile devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or compatible vehicle infotainment systems, giving them more time to safely react.

According to a University of Minnesota study, digital alerting can reduce the risk of collisions with responding emergency vehicles by 60-90%. Since launching more than two years ago, the Safety Cloud has processed more than 100 million driver alerts.

Captain Brian Basore of KHP said that his department adopted Safety Cloud to make roads safer for everyone. “Safety Cloud provides our Motorist Assist Operators critical protection in the field while providing valuable information for incident management to the KDOT Traffic Management Centers; KC Scout in Kansas City and WICHway in Wichita. We want drivers to be aware of our presence so that everyone can get home safely, and digital alerting gives us a new way to improve awareness for all drivers.”

HAAS Alert CEO and founder Cory Hohs said, “Now more than ever, we have to protect our first responders from preventable collisions. We’re excited to partner with KHP and do our part in the work they do every day keeping Kansas roadways safe and moving.”
