August 24, 2020 – Hill & Smith Inc. is adding HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud® collision prevention and digital alerting solution to its industry-leading line of ITS & Smart Work Zone solutions, bringing the latest roadway safety technology to Work Zones across the world. Safety Cloud will be available as an add-on safety solution for active Work Zone vehicles and integrated into Hill & Smith’s diverse line of Smart Work Zone devices, including its Smart ArrowMaster™ arrow board to send Work Zone safety alerts to approaching motorists. With vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology gaining momentum globally, the connections between vehicles, roadside infrastructure, Work Zone equipment and personnel, and backend management systems will be at the core of Smart Cities and next-generation mobility.

Safety Cloud provides roadway workers with advanced safety and protection by delivering real-time notifications to approaching drivers through Waze and vehicle navigation systems, providing more time for motorists to safely avoid collision with crews and equipment. Since launching three years ago, Safety Cloud has become a standard safety feature on first responder fleet manufacturers and is actively in use by Public Safety departments and DOT fleets in over 100 U.S. cities. To date, the service has already processed over 200,000,000 driver alerts.

The Hill & Smith Inc. and HAAS Alert partnership will now bring the protection of Safety Cloud to the Construction and Work Zone industry where it is critically needed; according to the Federal Highway Administration, more than 27,000 people have died in work zone collisions in the last 35 years. Hill & Smith Inc. will initially deploy the alerts as part of a project with RTC Southern Nevada and plans to rapidly expand usage of the alerts across Connected Arrow Boards and work trucks in the months ahead.

Gary Lallo, CEO & President of Hill & Smith Inc., said of the partnership, “We are excited to join forces with HAAS Alert to enhance our ITS Smart Work Zone product-line and make work zones safer for workers and the traveling public. The prevalence of distracted driving, especially in work zones, requires innovate solutions that warn drivers of potential hazards. By partnering with HAAS Alert, we can now do that better than ever before.”

Todd Hartnett, ITS Business Development Director for Hill & Smith Inc. added, “Smart Work Zones are growing and evolving at a rapid pace as safety needs are identified and new technologies are introduced. By adding Safety Cloud to our Smart Work Zone Devices and to work truck fleets, we’re providing our customers with the very best digital alerting safety solution available today. Work crews deserve every protection we can offer, and with Safety Cloud, we are excited to offer world-class safety that will save lives.”

Cory Hohs, HAAS Alert’s CEO, said this integration will transform Work Zone safety. “It’s an unfortunate reality that construction and work zone crews are at constant risk in the field. Our service is built to alert drivers much further in advance as they approach hazardous work zones to keep everyone safe from collision. We’re increasing the chances that everyone gets home safely, especially the professionals that maintain our country’s infrastructure.”
